Founders ask the rate question in every first call and usually get a vague answer. Here are the published numbers for 2026, from the places buyers actually look, what moves them up or down, and where my own pricing sits so you can judge it against the market.
Hourly rates by seniority and region
Hourly is how marketplaces price, so it is the number most people have seen. The spread is wide because it mixes a student in Lahore with a staff designer in San Francisco.
| Source | Published range | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Upwork, product designers | $20 to $50 an hour typical, median $30 | All levels, weighted to low-cost regions and short tasks |
| Twine rate guide | Entry $25 to $90, mid-level $50 to $130, by region | Freelancers on a marketplace, three regional bands |
| Contra rate guide | Mid-level with 2 to 5 years $60 to $100, senior above that | Curated freelancers, mostly US and Europe |
| contractrates.fyi | Average $96, middle half between $65 and $125 | 379 self-reported contracts, mostly US tech |
| Reddit r/UXDesign threads | $90 to $150 in major US cities | Working designers quoting what they charge |
Read together: a senior product designer with shipped products charges $90 to $150 an hour in the US and $60 to $110 in Western and Central Europe. Anything under $50 is either junior, a production task, or a marketplace race to the bottom.
Monthly retainers
Senior freelancers rarely bill hourly for product work, because hours punish the person who is fast. The common shape is a retainer for a fixed number of days a week.
| Engagement | Typical monthly cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Senior freelancer, Europe, 2 to 3 days a week | $4,000 to $8,000 | Includes design system work in most cases |
| Senior freelancer, US, 2 to 3 days a week | $8,000 to $15,000 | Higher base rate, same scope |
| Fractional head of design, 1 to 2 days a week | $6,000 to $12,000 | Leadership, reviews, hiring, less hands-on |
| Design agency, dedicated designer | $15,000 to $40,000 | Includes project management and the pitch for their next client |
| Full-time senior product designer, US | $14,000 to $19,000 | Salary plus about 20 percent for benefits, before equity |
Per-project prices
- UX audit of a SaaS product: $1,500 to $5,000 for a solo senior, $8,000 to $20,000 at an agency. The difference is mostly the report format and the number of people in the debrief.
- MVP design, core flows and screens: $2,000 to $10,000 as a fixed kickstart, more if it includes a full design system and a marketing site.
- Design system in Figma and code: $8,000 to $30,000 depending on how many components exist already and whether it has to match a live codebase.
- Marketing site, design and build: $5,000 to $20,000 for a freelancer, $25,000 and up for an agency.
What moves the number
- Seniority, measured in shipped products, not years. Ask what is live and who uses it. A designer with five products in production charges more than one with fifty Dribbble shots, and is worth it.
- Scope: UI only, or the product. Someone who only draws screens is cheaper than someone who also does the flows, the system and the handoff. The second one saves you an engineer's month.
- Region. A senior in Skopje, Lisbon or Warsaw costs half of a senior in New York for the same work, which is why so many US startups hire in Europe.
- Engagement length. Retainers are cheaper per day than projects, because the designer is not selling the next job while doing yours.
- How well you brief. A clear scope with a decision maker on the client side shaves 20 to 30 percent off any quote, because the quote is mostly risk.
How to compare two quotes
Ask both for the same four things: the number of flows and screens, what is delivered and in what format, how many revision rounds, and who owns the files. A quote without those is a guess, and the cheaper guess usually costs more by month three.
Where my pricing sits
I am a senior freelance product designer in Skopje working with SaaS founders in the US, UK and EU. My prices are public: a one-time MVP kickstart at $2,000, a product sprint at $4,000 a month for two to three days a week, a growth retainer at $6,500 a month that includes design leadership, and a SaaS UX audit at $1,500. Against the tables above that is the European senior band, for US-market work, with the design system included rather than quoted separately.
The freelance product designer for SaaS startups page lists what each plan includes, and the fractional page covers the retainer in detail. If you are still deciding between a freelancer, an agency or a marketplace, read what you actually get for the money, and if you are hiring for the first time, how to hire a product designer for your SaaS startup covers the evaluation.
